How to Check Your Etsy Listing SEO in 10 Minutes

Checking an Etsy listing's SEO takes about 10 minutes. You do not need a paid tool. You need to know what Etsy looks at, then find the weakest part of your listing and fix that first.
Step 1: Search like a buyer
Open Etsy in a private browser window so your history does not change the results. Type the phrase a buyer would use for your product, like "retro cat mug" or "nurse appreciation shirt".
Write down:
- Do you appear in the first two pages? If not, Etsy does not connect your listing with that phrase. That is a title and tag problem.
- Do you appear but nobody clicks? Compare your first photo and price with the listings around you. That is a photo or price problem.
Try three to five phrases. The ones where you do not appear at all tell you which words are missing.
Step 2: Check the first photo
The first photo decides whether a buyer clicks. Etsy's listing edit guide names these as reasons a listing shows up less in search:
- A dark or low-resolution first photo
- A photo collage as the first photo
- Too few photos
Etsy's image guidelines recommend photos at least 2000 pixels wide and tall. Zoom your search results out and check whether your design is still readable at thumbnail size.
Step 3: Check the title
Read only the first 40 characters of your title. That is roughly what a buyer sees on mobile.
- Does it say what the product is and who it is for?
- Does it use the words from Step 1, in the order a buyer types them?
- Is it free of keyword stuffing, like "Cat Mug, Cat Lover Mug, Cat Gift Mug, Funny Cat Mug"?
Lead with the clearest description. Add details after it.
Step 4: Check all 13 tags
Etsy allows 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. Etsy says it matches tags with shoppers' searches, in its tag guide.
Check that:
- You use all 13.
- Most tags are phrases of two or three words, not single words.
- You do not repeat the category name. Etsy already knows the listing is a mug.
- Every tag describes this listing. A tag like "Disney gift" on an unofficial design can trigger a trademark report. See Etsy IP infringement.
Tags help most when no attribute matches the search, so fill in attributes too.
Step 5: Check attributes and category
Pick the most specific category and fill in every attribute that applies: color, occasion, holiday, style. Etsy uses attributes as filters. A listing without "Christmas" as the holiday attribute can drop out when a buyer filters for Christmas.
Step 6: Check price and shipping
Etsy names US domestic shipping above $6 as a reason a listing appears less in search. Many POD sellers build shipping into the price and offer free shipping. Then compare your total price with the listings next to you in Step 1.
Step 7: Fix one thing, then wait
Fix the weakest part only. Wait two to four weeks, then repeat Step 1. If you change the photo, title and tags on the same day, you will not know which change worked.
Faster: use a listing checker
The free PaloTagz Etsy listing analyzer checks the title, tags, description and first photo, then suggests a new title. It needs no signup. It does not replace Step 1. A tool cannot tell you whether buyers actually see you for the phrases that matter.
If many listings have the same problem, fix them together. How to update Etsy tags in bulk shows how.

FAQ
How long does Etsy take to pick up listing changes? Etsy does not publish a timeline. I wait at least two weeks before I judge a change, longer for seasonal products.
Does the description affect Etsy SEO? The title, tags, attributes and category carry most of the weight in Etsy search. Google can index your description, and buyers read it before they buy. Write it for the buyer.
Is a high listing score a guarantee of sales? No. A listing checker catches missing basics. Sales depend on the design, the price and whether buyers want it.
